The other eco tours
At sunset, we will arrive at the south west corner of the laguna , walk a short path to reach Playa San Luis, the main beach where the leatherback and logerhead sea turtles come at night to lay eggs in the sand.
The tour starts late afternoon with the visit by boat of the shore of the Laguna where we can observe within the mangroves a great variety of migrating birds (red flamingos, spoon bird, aigrets, herons, ibis...)
Then we will visit by foot Cayo Iguana (Iguana Island) located in the center of the laguna, where we see many iguanas and a very dry vegetation mainly made of endemic cactus.
After diner, we will visit the Park Ranger nursery who collect eggs on the beach, keep them and protect them in their natural environment. 4 days after birth, the little turtles will be released in the Caribbean Sea.
Don´t miss this unique period in Dominican Republic: The arrival of the Leatherback Sea Turtle (the biggest of the world) on the lonely beaches of the Laguna de Oviedo, Biosfere reserve and part of the National Park Jaragua.
The eggs laying season is from April 1st till June 30th.
As nature is impredictible, return at your hotel is between midnight and 2 am.
At 9 pm, the show begins! From the top of a wooden tower, you will see the giant Leatherback Sea turtle getting out of the water and walk slowly along to beach to find perfect the spot to lay her eggs.
This part of the tour is carefully supervised by Dominican Park rangers in order to ensure that your visit will have the minimum impact on the natural cycle.
